Tim Hanauer: Biography

Colorado songwriter, Tim Hanauer, has always been fascinated with music. He experimented with the piano, the drums, and the saxophone before picking up a guitar. “When I was 16, my little sister got a guitar for her birthday. I was extremely jealous. I played it until it broke,” Tim says. He finally received his own guitar when he graduated from high school. He wrote his first song that same day. “I took a year off after high school and did little but write and play guitar,” he says. Tim studied Creative Writing at Colorado State University, earning his bachelors in 2001.

Tim recorded his first record, Boomerang, in March 2006. Since the independent release, Tim has earned back-to-back Folks Songwriter honorable mentions from the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival and an International Songwriting award. He has performed live on Denver's 9 News, at the Larimer County Fair, A Taste of Colorado, and at numerous colleges and venues in the region.

Boomerang was named “Favorite acoustic-style CD of 2006,” by Rosalie Howarth, KFOG, San Francisco. While Tim has received airplay coast to coast on specialty shows like KFOG’s Acoustic Sunrise and Sunset and WTYD’s Playing in the Tide Pool, his biggest successes have been on the small screen. Tim is gaining international success through songs featured on CBS's The Ghost Whisperer, CW’s Joan of Arcadia, Lifetime’s Army Wives, ABC’s Lincoln Heights and Canadian Television’s Whistler.

Tim’s 2009 release, Time for Change, has been featured on the CW’s One Tree Hill and 90210, CBS’s The Ghost Whisperer, HBO's How to Make it in America, ABC's CASTLE and Jane by Design, USA's Necessary Roughness, in the made for TV movies, Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, and The Blue Eyed Butcher, the film, I Hate Valentine's Day, in a GMC Terrain ad and most recently in ads for ADRIANNA PAPELL clothing and Piedmont Healthcare. Chances are, you've heard it, even if you didn't know it.

In 2011, he released the EP, Wind Up Toy.  Songs from the EP have been featured numerous times on 90210, in The Lying Game, and in the trailer for the film, Jeff Who Lives at Home.

Lyrically, he’s an idealist and a romantic. His lines are imbued with the idea that things are always going to get better.  He records with vintage instruments and makes handcrafted records.  His newest record, Shape Shifter (released in December), is an amalgam of indie folk, rock, and alt-country.  There’s even a little Cuban Songo.  Tie it all together with his soulful, soft and powerful voice and you have Shape Shifter.

Whole Foods Market’s Whole Planet Foundation has recently utilized Hanauer’s song “Hooray for Love” as part of their “Download For A Difference” campaign. The digital compilation puts Hanauer side by side with Alabama Shakes, Ingrid Michaelson, The Civil Wars, Andrew Bird and Bonnie Raitt. The campaign funds micro loans to entrepreneurs and is promoted online to Whole Foods’ 1,000,000+ customer base.

As a critic for Etched in Stone magazine wrote, “Hanauer not only released a new album for many people to enjoy, he released new life lessons and a new way to think about music. These songs aren’t just titles displayed on an iPod touch, they are passionate and beautiful encounters with life.”
